Just an idea, but what about open sourcing the backend? There are a ton of feature requests and I suppose you guys are pretty busy so why not allow pull requests for features? Let the community help out?

You still need the physical Twine so Supermechanical can keep making profit of the hardware and have a more feature rich backend which in its turn will attract more buyers?

Idea for Temperature Monitoring App

I'm keen to see the temperature to monitor an environment at a quick glance.

How about an app that has a badge on it. Much like the iOS Messages and Mail apps that have a badge number displaying how many unread messages there are in the app.

The Twine Temperature app could have a badge that is a live view of the current temperature of your Twine. No need to ever go into the app.

If you did go into the app perhaps it could allow you to select which Twine you're monitoring should you have more than one.

Just an idea. As I don't have any of the abilities to make that happen.

We talked briefly last year about an API. My company develops the Indigo home automation software for the Mac. We would love to see an Indigo plugin for the Twine. We would prefer some way to directly catch status updates whenever something changes on the Twine. Is that going to be possible?

Twine and home automation

For those who have a Vera 3 from MiCasaVerde, I just created a plugin
for the unit that will poll the twine. It saves the values in variables
that can be retrieved later, and you can also request for a value to be
returned when the polling function returns.

I use ifttt.com, which has a rule that will run when I send an email to trigger@ifttt.com. It uses the from email address to determine who I am. I want to know if I register that email address (that my twine alerts come from) will it always be that address so I can have a hacked integration with ifttt?

My twine is setup to email me if the garage door has been open for more than 30min. After some initial email delivery hiccups this is now working well.

I also wanted to write a program for my Android phone so that I could query the garage door's status directly. Yes, I know I can bookmark the twine's page but that's not as fun as writing a program that pops up a simple "OPEN" or "CLOSED" alert panel :-)

If you're interested in doing the same thing, here are some tips...

On my Android 4.1 Jellybean phone (Nexus S) StartCom, the CA for twine.supermechanical.com, isn't trusted. When I hit my twine's page with a browser I get a certificate error. It's easy enough to hit "Continue" in the browser, but more annoying to deal with this programmatically.

So I downloaded the following certs to root directory my phone and then imported them with System Settings -> Security ->Install from storage:

(You may only need the second one but I loaded both to be sure)

Once completed you should no longer get certificate errors in your browser.

The next step is getting your twine's status. I used Firefox + Live HTTP Headers to watch the http traffic when I load the twine's page and isolate the call the retrieves the JSON-encoded twine status.

My JSON status URL looks something like this:

<1> is the twine's id # (long number that's in your twine's status page URL
<2> is another long number, I assume a timestamp, I haven't played with this, just grabbed it verbatim from the HTTP request. Maybe one of the Twine team members can comment?

The other item you want from that request is your user_id cookie. You'll need to supply it when your program makes a GET request.

Parsing the JSON is easy, I just look for a substring of "top" or "front" which, on my twine, maps to the garage door being "CLOSED" or "OPEN".

I used Tasker to write the program itself. A very handy tool for quick prototyping, writing productivity apps, or customizing your phone's behavior. If you have an Android phone and have read this far, my guess is that you'll find it useful! :-)

I'm setting up one as a remote temperature alarm in a condo. if the temp drops below 40 I want to know about it so I can get the management folks involved.

I'd like a script that I can run periodically form my home machine that "pings" the twine to see when its last update was so I can discover if

1. the power is out

2. someone has stolen the unit

3. something weird is going on.

any suggestions ?

Plotting magswitch states on a timeline in a Google spreadsheet?

Following a thread regarding combining Twine and IFTTT, I've created an autoupdating spreadsheet, which saves all the magswitch state changes like this:

Now, is there a way to plot a timeline based on this data, that would graphically show for how long each state lasted? I imagine this would require reformatting the time and finding a proper visualisation type, but really no idea how to do this. Anyone tried anything similar? Thanks!

Is there any way to export and import rules? For example, if I want 10 Twines to have the same rules (or slight variations), is there an easy way to do that?

More precisely, I'd like the ability to arbitrarily move Twines from location to location for spot-monitoring, and just make it a button-click to load up the correct rule set for the location.
